We've been enjoying watching some of the Olympics this year. Loved the interview with David Boudia and Steele Johnson after they won the silver. Watch here.. In response to why he was so calm, Steele told NBC, "...the fact that I was going into this event knowing that my identity is rooted in Christ and not what the result of this competition is just gave me peace ... and it let me enjoy the contest," Johnson told NBC. "If something went great, I was happy. If something didn't go great, I could still find joy..."
Same spirit in gymnist Laurie Hernandez...and it's clear that glowing smile is not just for competition but is an overflow of what God is doing in her heart. Read article.
We've loved watching athletes over the years that know this peace and power in Christ. I know there are many others on this Olympic team I didn't mention. While it's been fun to watch the physical feats achieved, it's been even more fun to see the power and glory of God on display.
John 14:21 says “Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him."”
John 14:21 ESV
MANIFEST!.. All the the creative, powerful, healing, loving and uncountable attributes of God will "show up" in the lives of those who give themselves wholeheartedly to Him. Not for the glory of the person but so all those around can also visibly see and encounter God. It's so awesome. It's not about athletics (which tend to be more in the public eye) but simply God making himself known through an infinite number of ways according to individual interests and need, whether in the spotlight on earth or only seen by heaven. Whether you call out to Him in a sports arena or in the middle of the night in your bed. ALL who call on the name of the Lord shall be saved (Joel 2:32)
We have loved watching each of our teens, entering what is often turbulent years of life trying to establish identity, instead having their identity "rooted in Christ" and filled with peace and joy no matter the circumstance. Hungry to serve God in various ways He has called them to. Our children are such an encouragement to us!
Don’t let anyone think less of you because you are young. Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity.”
