"People are often unreasonable and self-centered.

Forgive them anyway.

If you are kind people may accuse you of ulterior motives.

Be kind anyway.

If you are honest, people may cheat you. Be honest anyway.

If you find happiness, people may be jealous.

Be happy anyway.

The good you do today may be forgotten tomorrow.

Do good anyway.

Give the world the best you have and it may never be enough.

Give your best anyway.

For you see, in the end it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway."

Mother Teresa

When we started our journey over four years ago, one of our first extended  parking spots was the backyard of this special church family. We are so grateful for the hospitality of Pastor Phil and Tammy and time to worship together again this past weekend.

We love being able to attend at least one of James' gigs this time of year...

Camera is a bit wobbly from one whose little arm was on mine and who was begging to go to the bathroom.

Heading north now for Chicago Christmas performances.

Over the past couple of months, we've had the joy of helping to wrap gifts (lots) for children whose parents are either deceased, imprisoned or otherwise not involved as well as teen moms.

Hand delivering them at tonight's party has left a lasting impact in all our hearts. What an amazing, abundant and awesome God we trust in, who cares for every need and forgets no one!

We sat at Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price's meeting room table this afternoon as she warmly answered questions from each of the kids.

Our main takeaways from our time with her after hearing her heart and stories...LOVE GOD AND PRAY FOR WISDOM,  BE PASSIONATE ABOUT LOVING PEOPLE, THINK BIG AND ACT ON IT!
(It was inspiring to meet a politician who exemplifies all this.)
When we stepped off the elevator we were greeted by a precious woman, a total beacon of light in that place, whose name I believe was Katherine-(will try to find out). I wish we would have gotten a picture with her as well as she made us feel so welcome and spoke encouragement into each of the children individually regarding their future and interests. What a gift!
We had a little time to hang out in  the downtown water gardens afterwards.

After spending the past few months thinking we had lost a year's worth of pictures (restored thankfully!) thought we should preserve a few favorites here.

Today was the last day of the exhibit of world- renown modern impressionistic painter Henrietta Milan at the Museum of Biblical Art in Dallas.  All of her paintings are done with knives and inspired mostly inspired by her European travels- many from Claude Monet's gardens. Photos were not allowed in the museum but since we unexpectedly "happened" to meet Mrs. Milan herself and visit with her awhile, we got the ultimate permission to get a family photo with her in front of one of her works.

It was fun to swap travel stories and hear from her son Tal about his growing up on the road in Europe.  Mrs. Milan was also a champion gymnast (almost qualified for Olympics) in the 50's and also spent many years coaching top level gymnasts. We love all the incredible people that "happen" to become our friends along the journey.

We actually  haven't met a person yet that isn't totally amazing. Some diamonds may dazzle brighter at first glance but others in the rough are just as sparkly after some chipping away and polishing.  All are created in the image of God.  Every friendship, new and old, is a cherished treasure.

Last fall, a Des Moines Register article on Iowa's starting quarterback, CJ Beathard, and his faith, also featured our son, Jay... Read article...  A simple phone call and all that transpired thereafter has poured more timely strength and courage into our family in and through Jay than I'm sure will ever be known.

As football season starts up, we honor and respect CJ not just for incredible talent and hard work but for character and love for Jesus Christ.

Jay texted this to CJ last week:

“You will guard him and keep him in perfect and constant peace whose mind [both its inclination and its character] is stayed on You, because he commits himself to You, leans on You, and hopes confidently in You. So trust in the Lord (commit yourself to Him, lean on Him, hope confidently in Him) forever; for the Lord God is an everlasting Rock [the Rock of Ages].”

‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭26:3-4‬ ‭AMP

A great promise for every one of us!

We are cheering on ALL the Iowa Hawkeyes as always this year and looking forward to this coming football season.

It's hard to believe it's been four years exactly since the first blog entry and this upstream journey began.  The cycles of finding ourselves overwhelmed by life's circumstances and in the next moment finding ourselves overwhelmed by God's goodness and victory keep rolling.   At first, our eyes might have been set on what we would SEE in our travels, but  we've discovered it's been much more of a journey in the realm of what we can't  see with our eyes and struggle to articulate.  (Hebrews 11:1   “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”)

As the illusions of safety, stability, security and comfort have faded, we've had the privilege of learning to live in the real presence of the great Protector, Defender, the Rock, our Provider,  Comforter and Healer!  We all could tell unending stories of miraculous things that only God could have orchestrated. We've met countless amazing people across the country and love EVERY ONE!!    It's been truly amazing and it still feels like the journey has just begun.  Our future plans are written in James 4:13-14.

““I do live in the world. But I don't fight my battles the way the people of the world do. The weapons I fight with are not the weapons the world uses. In fact, it is just the opposite. My weapons have the power of God to destroy the camps of the enemy. I destroy every claim and every reason that keeps people from knowing God. I keep every thought under control in order to make it obey Christ.”

We've been enjoying watching some of the Olympics this year. Loved the interview with David Boudia and Steele Johnson after they won the silver. Watch here.. In response to why he was so calm, Steele told NBC, "...the fact that I was going into this event knowing that my identity is rooted in Christ and not what the result of this competition is just gave me peace ... and it let me enjoy the contest," Johnson told NBC. "If something went great, I was happy. If something didn't go great, I could still find joy..."

We've loved watching athletes over the years that know this peace and power in Christ. I know there are many others on this Olympic team I didn't mention. While it's been fun to watch the physical feats achieved, it's been even more fun to see the power and glory of God on display.

Just a few other inspirational back-stories...

Simone Biles

Laurie Hernandez

Michael Phelps

Abbey A'gostino

John 14:21 says “Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him."”
‭‭John‬ ‭14:21‬ ‭ESV‬‬

MANIFEST!.. All the the creative, powerful, healing, redeeming,  loving and uncountable attributes of God will "show up" in the lives of those who give themselves wholeheartedly to Him. Not for the glory of the person or to win competitions but so all those around can also visibly see and encounter God. It's not a religious spirit but a real on-going friendship with Jesus.  It's not about athletics (which tend to be in the public eye) but simply God making himself known through an infinite number of ways according to  individual interests and need, whether in the spotlight on earth or only seen by heaven.

And we pray that all we encounter on our journey are encountering Him through us and if they don't, they would know that's not Jesus on display, it's just "us" needing forgiveness and redemption like you.  Whether you call out to Him in a sports arena or in the middle of the night in your bed.  ALL who call on the name of the Lord shall be saved (Joel 2:32)

Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me. You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies. You honor me by anointing my head with oil. My cup overflows with blessings.
